Marble, the Greek ‘gold’

The Museum of Marble Crafts located in Pyrgos / Pirgos, a village on the island of Tinos, was created by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation (PIOP) which is also responsible for running it. The Museum features marble technology mainly in the 19th and 20th centuries and provides detailed descriptions on the tools and techniques used. Highlighted is also the social and economic context in which local workshops were developed.

Achilleas Chatzikonstantinou visited this exciting place and he wrote an enthusiastic article inviting us to visit the Museum. September is the ideal month for a Tinian weekend. The article is on the Greek version of our site but for the English speaking visitors we have provided a page taken from the very rich and well organized site of the PIOP: www.piop.gr
